Joseph C. Rumenapp, Ph.D.
Program Director and Associate Professor
Joseph C. Rumenapp is a community-engaged scholar with more than 10 years of experience working in a variety of urban educational contexts. He received his Ph.D. in Literacy, Language, and Culture from the University of Illinois at Chicago where he also worked on large-scale federal teacher development grants. Prior to coming to St. John’s literacy program, he served as an assistant professor of literacy research at Judson University and as an educational research methodologist at Concordia University-Portland. His research interests focus on translanguaging and multimodality in early literacy contexts as well as the use of discourse analysis in teacher education. Drawing on critical theories, he uses his research to highlight inequitable educational practices and works with research participants to enact change. In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Joseph works with several community organizations. He serves on the board of Project Education Plus, a community educational and athletic non-profit organization in Chicago, Illinois.
