St. John’s President’s Message

Welcome to St. John’s University!

For more than 147 years, St. John’s University has educated the sons and daughters of immigrants.  Founded in 1870, the University was established by the Vincentians at the request of the first Bishop of Brooklyn to provide higher education to a growing immigrant population. We are proud of this tradition which fosters openness and respect for every person and equal opportunity to attain a college education. As such, it is not surprising that St. John’s is among the most diverse national universities in the country.

In pursuit of this mission, St. John’s University continues to expand our reach to students around the world through a growing number of online graduate programs. Through this effort, working professionals now have the ability to pursue a St. John’s education at the location and times that work for them. Most of our online courses are taught by full-time faculty who are certified to teach online. They understand the complexities of teaching adult online learners and know how to deliver online the same high-caliber, academically challenging instruction that our on-campus students receive.

As a St. John’s online student, you will be supported by a full range of online student services, from online registration to financial aid, library resources, tutoring, campus ministry and more. You will also enjoy the networking opportunities that come with studying at a university with alumni who are committed to your success and well-represented in New York City’s top corporations and not-for-profit organizations.

At the same time, our online students receive an education focused not only on the desire for knowledge and pursuit of academic excellence but also the compassion to serve others—especially those most in need—following the example of St. Vincent de Paul. When you study with St. John’s, you will not only gain the knowledge to advance your career, but also build the skills to grow into an ethical and responsible leader who is ready to make a difference in the world.

At St. John’s, our primary goal is to ensure the success of our students. I encourage you to learn more about the University’s excellent online graduate programs and our outstanding faculty, staff, and administrators. We hope that you join us for a quality online education—and become part of our welcoming St. John’s community of more than 20,000 students and 175,000 alumni.

I thank you for your interest in St. John’s University.
