In our CACREP-aligned program, you can build counseling, collaboration, and advocacy skills through graduate coursework and supervised field experiences, including a practicum and two supervised internships, that give you real practice working with diverse learners.

Program Details

The school counseling master’s degree takes you beyond the basics and into the real work of supporting students in K–12 settings. You will explore how children and adolescents grow, how culture and identity shape their experiences, and how counselors engage in collaborative work with educators and families to create supportive school environments.  

As part of our program, courses in assessment, consultation, evaluation, and career development can help you understand the tools counselors use every day, while advanced study in counseling theory and psychosocial development strengthens your ability to respond to a wide range of student needs. Graduate ready to meet New York State school counselor initial certification requirements and make a meaningful difference in students’ lives.

Explore what it Takes to Become an Effective School Counselor

To better understand the K-12 student and gain a clear view of how ASCA-aligned comprehensive counseling programs function within today’s schools, you’ll study multicultural counseling, consultation, evaluation, and career development. You’ll also learn how to apply your training in practical, student-centered ways that support elementary to high school counselor preparation through faculty who bring real school experience into their teaching.  

What You’ll Experience:

  • Coursework that builds a strong foundation in counseling skills, assessment, group dynamics, and core counseling theories
  • Opportunities to deepen your understanding of student development, multicultural counseling, consultation, evaluation, and the structure of school support services
  • Hands on learning through a practicum and two supervised internships in both elementary and secondary settings that allow you to work directly with students and prepare for professional certification

School Counseling Admission Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • 18 credits at the undergraduate level in social sciences
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Writing sample on candidate's desire to be a school counselor
  • Interview with faculty

How many credits are required for the M.S.Ed. in School Counseling?

 The program requires 60 graduate credits, completed across 20 courses, including three supervised field experiences.

How long does it take to complete the degree online?

Most students finish in 24 months of part time study.

Is the program accredited?

This newly developed program is not yet accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP) but is aligned with both the CACREP standards and the ASCA framework.  

Does this program meet certification requirements?

Yes. The online M.S.Ed. in School Counseling meets New York State requirements for initial school counselor certification, provided all fieldwork and coursework requirements are successfully completed.

How many field placements are included in the curriculum?

Students complete three supervised field experiences: one practicum and two internships in K–12 school settings. One internship must be completed in an elementary setting and one internship must be completed in a secondary setting.

What is the cost per credit for the program?

Tuition is 1,000 dollars per credit, not including applicable university and general fees.
